Is Mimosa indica or sativa? Its genetics and family tree

The two parents

Clementine is Crockett Family Farms’ cross of Tangie and Lemon Skunk, an energizing sativa-dominant strain that Leafly users describe as focused, energetic and uplifted, with orange, citrus and lemon flavors; Leafly says it won a best sativa concentrate award in 2015.^2,13 Its own parent Tangie, California Orange × Skunk #1, is what Leafly means when it calls Mimosa a staple of the Tangie family.^1,20

Purple Punch is Granddaddy Purple × Larry OG, which Leafly describes as a sweet, sedating dessert strain whose top effects are sleepy, relaxed and hungry.³ High Times reported that Supernova Gardens bred it in 2012 from a Granddaddy Purple female and a Larry OG male, and GreenState that Supernova Gardens gave it to Symbiotic Genetics, which stabilized it.^14,21 Headset’s March 2020 strain report counted Purple Punch among the “newcomers” with a strong showing in its 2019 ranking of top strains by shopper generation.²² The Purple Punch in Mimosa was Symbiotic’s own F2.⁴

How it was bred and released

The breeders wanted a sweet citrus terpene profile that would also make excellent hash, GreenState reports, and tested many phenotypes before choosing one. Jungle Boys tested the cross at their facility and sent back feedback, data and photos that helped narrow the selection.⁴ Symbiotic Genetics released Mimosa in 2017: only 400 seed packs, split between two stores, plus finished flower for the LA market.⁴ SeedFinder says the breeder’s Mimosa was never sold as feminized seed.²³

How sativa is it?

Most sources call Mimosa sativa-dominant; Leafly files it as a hybrid and rates it mostly energizing. Weedmaps calls it sativa-dominant; AllBud, Royal Queen Seeds and Zamnesia list 70% sativa / 30% indica, and ILGM says sativa-dominant.^1,5,6,7,8,9 SeedFinder lists the breeder’s original simply as indica/sativa.²³ The parents explain the spread: Clementine is sativa-dominant and energizing, Purple Punch indica-leaning and mostly calming.^3,13

Seeds, cuts and seed versions

The original was never easy to get. The 2017 release was 400 packs of regular seed, Weedmaps says seeds are reportedly difficult to source, and SeedFinder says the breeder never sold it feminized.^4,5,23

Feminized seeds sold as Mimosa come from other companies: Royal Queen Seeds and Zamnesia describe theirs as Clementine × Purple Punch, and ILGM sells a version it calls sativa-leaning.^7,8,9 Barney’s Farm’s Mimosa EVO, which it describes as evolved from a famous Emerald Triangle cut bred by Symbiotic Genetics, is a cross with Orange Punch, not a Mimosa seed line.¹⁰ SeedFinder records 139 direct descendants of Symbiotic Genetics’ Mimosa.²³

What our lab data adds

Our strict matching excluded 1,640 results across all product types (1,075 of them flower) sold under near-miss names. The largest group is "Mimosa - MMS" (566 results), whose suffix strict matching treats as part of the name; the rest include other strains and crosses that carry the name, such as "Burmese Mimosa" (144), "Mimosa Cake" (126), Watermelon Mimosa trim, pre-roll material and bulk buds (105) and "Flower - Banana OG x Mimosa #6" (36).³⁶ Leafly lists Symbiotic Genetics’ Nam Wah as Banana OG × Mimosa V6.¹⁶ Watermelon Zkittlez, a parent of one Watermelon Mimosa, has its own guide in the Official Cannabis network at watermelonz.com, and Wedding Cake, Mimosa Cake’s other parent, at weddingcakestrain.com.
