Why it spread
It arrived at the right moment. GreenState says Mimosa came out in 2017, when Tangie and other orange strains were sharing the podium with dessert strains as the most coveted by consumers and growers, and that its breeders wanted a sweet citrus profile that would also make good hash.1 The release was tiny, and scarcity did the rest: people lined up at the two stores, and packs resold at auction for $1,500 to $2,000.1
Growers carried it from there. Jungle Boys tested the cross before release and, by High Times’ account in 2019, brought it into full production; growers’ own selections placed at the Emerald Cup and the NorCal Cannabis Cup.1,3,10,12 Then it became a parent: SeedFinder counts 139 direct descendants, Leafly lists Symbiotic’s own Ginger Mints and Nam Wah as crosses of its refined V6 cut, and Royal Queen Seeds, Zamnesia and ILGM sell feminized versions.14,18,19,20,21,22
The disputed parts of the story
- Year: 2017 in the breeders’ account, and a Mimosa selection was already placing at the Emerald Cup in December 2017; Weedmaps says it emerged in 2018.1,2,10
- The 2018 Cannabis Cup: Weedmaps credits Mimosa with second place in the sativa category in Santa Rosa; High Times’ winners list names the entry “Mimosa #A5 by Atrium Farms”, not the breeder.2,12
- The breeders’ names: GreenState names the co-founders Michael and Vince; SeedFinder credits two growers known as The Village and Budologist, and GreenState’s podcast calls Michael “The Village”.1,16,23
- Purple Punch’s birthplace: Supernova Gardens in Hawaii in 2012, per High Times; Supernova Gardens in Oregon, per GreenState.6,7
- Chalice: GreenState’s best-breeder write-up says Mimosa led to a best-in-show prize at Chalice, the Southern California cannabis festival, but gives no year or category, so it is not in the timeline above.13
